The “In Paznaun” series is brought to you by Ischgl, Galtür, See, and Kappl. In the summer, the Paznaun region in western Tyrol is popular for its hiking, motor biking, and gourmet cuisine.

Picture this – humid air shimmering in the heat, sweat pouring down in streams, blisters on your feet, and  bedbugs hiding in worn-out mattresses… The pilgrimage to the grave of the Apostle James in Santiago de Compostela in Spain every year attracts thousands of pilgrims, each who endure these trials in order to attain something like enlightenment. But there are easier ways to get a piece of the pie.

All Roads Lead to Rome….
…or to Santiago de Compostela, even if you depart from eastern Austria. In this country, the pilgrim route leads from Vienna to Linz and Salzburg, through the “German Corner” and on to Innsbruck to Paznaun. On the so-called “culinary Pilgrimage,” the sunny side of the Jakobsweg awaits some pilgrims.

Star Cuisine in the High Mountains

For the third summer,  international celebrity chefs, led by Eckart Witzigmann, create a menu with regional dishes for each alpine club hut in Paznaun. In this way hiking and fine dining can be wonderfully combined, as you enjoy hiking and nouvelle cuisine in Tyrol.

Stars of Star Cuisine

Curious? In 2010 the following chefs were there and created dishes for the culinary Jakobsweg: Gerrit Grevelig (Netherlands), Martin Hermann (Germany), Franz Fuiko (Austria), and Ivo Adam (Switzerland).

The Jamtal Circuit

In Galtür, hikes start in the Jamtal, one of the most beautiful high Alpine valleys. From the village square, 3 hours away on foot, is the “Jamtal hut” (7,100 ft), ready to serve hungry hikers and mountain bikers. Of course there are also popular hiking trails for all fitness levels off this circuit as well.
